# Adding Planning Categories

### Adding planning categories

When you sign up, Smartbooks automatically creates a **budget for the current year**. If you want to plan for a future year or create a **latest estimate** for the current year, you can add additional planning categories.

You can manage planning categories via **Settings → Planning Categories**.

### Step 1: Create a planning category

1. Go to **Settings → Planning Categories**
2. Click **Create from scratch** or **Create as a copy**
3. Choose whether the category is a **Budget** or a **Forecast**

Once created, the planning category is available in Smartbooks.

### Step 2: Make the planning category available for input

Planning categories must be added to the **Manual Input** selector before they can be used.

1. Open the **Manual Input** screen
2. Check the selector at the top of the page:
   * If your new planning category is visible, you can start budgeting immediately
   * If it is not visible, follow the steps below

### Adding a planning category to the selector

1. Click the **settings icon (⚙️)** in the top-right corner of the Manual Input screen
2. Review the **Displayed Rows and Categories** list

If your planning category is missing:

* Click the **➕ (plus)** icon to add it

If the category exists but the year is missing:

* Click the category
* Add a year manually:
  * Enter a static year (for example, `2026`), or
  * Use a dynamic expression (for example, `current + 1`)
* Press **Enter**

3. Click **Save Changes**

Your planning category and selected year will now appear in the selector and are ready for use.
