# Adjusting General Ledger Settings

Every general ledger (GL) account in Smartbooks comes with a set of configurable options. These options include the Description, Type, and the Source for Planning. Please note that the Source for Planning option may not always be available, as it depends on the planning settings of the subfolders that the account is part of.

### Account Options

* **Description:**\
  A brief, descriptive name for the account.
* **Type:**\
  Defines how the account is classified (e.g., Income, Expense, Asset, Liability, or General).
* **Source for Planning:**\
  When enabled, this option indicates whether the account will be used in budgeting and forecasting. Its availability depends on the planning settings applied to the subfolders containing the account. For more details on creating budgets and forecasts, please refer to the [Financial Planning](/smartbooks-docs/data-models/financial-planning.md) section.

### Changing an Incorrect Type

Ensuring the correct account type is essential for accurate reporting. For example, if an income account is misclassified as an expense, the sign in your Profit and Loss reports may be displayed incorrectly.

To quickly verify and change account types:

1. **Verify Account Types:**\
   Click the **Account Type** button in the top-right corner. A small bubble will appear next to each folder and GL account, displaying its current type (e.g., Income, Expense, Asset, Liability).
2. **Change the Type:**
   * **Hover Over the Bubble:** Move your cursor over the type bubble to reveal a button.
   * **Select the Correct Type:** Click the button and choose whether to change the type for only the selected account or for all underlying accounts within that folder.
