# Providing Context

The quality of the AI Controller's analysis depends heavily on the context you provide. Your financial data tells the AI *what* the numbers are, context tells it *why* they matter for your business. Well-written context turns generic commentary into analysis that reads like it was written by someone who knows the company.

Context can be provided at two levels: the tenant and the entity.

#### Tenant context

Tenant-level context is entered in the general settings of your subscription:

1. Navigate to **Settings → Subscription → General**
2. Fill in the context field

Use tenant context for information that applies to the organisation as a whole, such as:

* A general description of the organisation and what it does
* How the companies in your environment relate to each other (for example: holding structure, operating companies, intercompany relationships)

#### Entity context

Each entity in Smartbooks has its own context field:

1. Select the entity you want to configure
2. Navigate to **Settings → General**
3. Fill in the context field

Use entity context to describe how this specific company works and how its data should be interpreted:

* **Metrics** — If you use metrics for operational data in your actuals and/or to construct the budget bottom-up, include this in the instructions. Explain which metrics you use and what they represent.
* **Modules** — Explain the modules you use and what data they contain. For both metrics and modules, this is important because it allows the AI to analyse variances better.
* **Accounting practices** — If your organisation has any specific way of accounting (for example: revenue recognition choices, intercompany recharges, capitalisation policies), explain this as well, so the AI interprets the figures the way your organisation intends.

#### Let AI help you write the context

You don't have to write the context from scratch. Smartbooks includes an AI tool that helps you draft it: it guides you through the relevant topics and turns your input into a well-structured context that the AI Controller can work with.

You can always review and edit the generated context afterwards, so it accurately reflects your organisation.
