# Enabling the AI Controller

The AI Controller is Smartbooks' built-in AI assistant for financial analysis. It works directly on your live data, so answers always reflect the current state of your administration — including the ability to drill down to the underlying journal entries.

Before you can use the AI Controller, it must be enabled at the subscription (tenant) level. This is done by a Tenant Admin and applies to all entities in the environment.

#### Enabling AI

1. Navigate to **Settings → Subscription → General**
2. Tick the checkbox to enable the usage of AI
3. Select the AI model you want to use

#### Model selection

Two model options are available:

* **Default** — a flagship model from Anthropic, Google, or OpenAI, selected for the highest performance.
* **European (Mistral)** — a model from the European provider Mistral, for organisations that prefer or require a European AI provider.

If AI is disabled, all AI-based features are turned off for the entire environment.
