# Transaction Journals

Smartbooks provides multiple ways to access and review transaction journals, allowing you to quickly drill down from reports or navigate directly to the full journal overview.

### Accessing the journals

You can open the **Journals** screen in two ways:

**Via the Reports section**

* Navigate to **Reports**
* Click the **Journals** tab on the left side of the screen

**From a financial report**

* Open a **Profit and Loss** or **Balance Sheet** report
* Right-click on a row or subtotal
* Click **Transactions**

When accessing journals from a report, Smartbooks automatically applies filters based on:

* The selected account or subfolder
* The active reporting period

These filters can be adjusted directly in the Journals screen if needed.

### Using the journals screen

In the **Journals** screen, you can filter transactions to quickly find specific entries. Available filters include:

* **Period**
* **Account**
* **Relation**
* **Journal**
* **Business dimension** (if applicable)

To view transaction details, click on a **journal entry**. This opens a detailed view showing:

* Transaction date
* GL account
* Relation or counterparty
* Description
* Debit and credit amounts
* Resulting balance

If available, you can also view and download any underlying invoices linked to the transaction.
